Big lottery fund support helps business boom at Spring Action
The Big Lottery Fund (Awards For All) is helping Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre’s (CRMC) new social enterprise – Spring Action – to secure new business and provide paid work for ten people seeking sanctuary in the city.
The award has enabled the charity to employ a manager to run Spring Action, a cleaning company based in Coventry. It was setup in April 2017 to provide job opportunities for refugees and migrants that were struggling to secure employment.
Jan Malatesta, Service Development Manager at CRMC helped setup Spring Action and said: “Refugees and migrants often face an uphill battle to find work because often they can’t prove their qualifications or point to previous UK based work experience or references. Because of this, they often get rejected from roles that they could easily do.
“Spring Action was setup to tackle these issues, but as a charity what we didn’t have was the time to fully develop it. Thanks to the generosity and support from the Big Lottery Fund, this helped us to employ a manager for the company three days a week. This was essential in enabling the business to develop.”
Uyiosa Osawe, a 21 year old from Coventry took over from Michael Gabriel as business manager for Spring Action earlier this year and the cleaning service is already reaping the rewards of the position, with 14 regular customers. These include Coventry Cathedral, Positive Youth Foundation and offices at Fargo Village, WEC International, Coventry Citizens Advice Bureau and Coventry 2021. Feedback to date has been positive.
Krishan Singh, operations manager at Positive Youth Foundation said: ”Spring Action has offered us an exceptional standard of cleaning services.
“The cleaner we have allocated has been outstanding with a strong work ethic and passion to clean. He is punctual, reliable and I would recommend this business wholeheartedly.”
Uyiosa said: “It’s been brilliant to secure so much new business, which means we can now employ seven cleaners working regular hours, in addition to another three individuals on a part time basis.
“For me, this is the key purpose of Spring Action; helping to make a positive impact in the lives of refugees and migrants, so they can support their families and have hope for the future.
“None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Jan and Michael and also the funding from The Big Lottery Fund. I can not wait to build on this in the coming months.”
